Heatlh - Surprising Findings For Treating Depression

In the US, use of antidepressants doubled between 1996 and 2005. According to IMS Health, in 2008 over 164 million prescriptions were written for antidepressants in the US, totaling $9.6 billion in sales. Pretty profitable little business there...

And those numbers continue to rise.

Scary. But what's even more frightening are the side effects.

And here's the kicker...

What the drug ads don't tell you is that depression is NOT even the result of low serotonin levels to begin with!

What they don't tell you is that elevated levels of serotonin caused by these drugs can cause changes in your cell neurons that can be classified as BRAIN DAMAGE.

Now THAT'S scary.

Plus ALL antidepressants are required by the FDA to carry a warning about the risk of suicidal thoughts, hostility, and agitation.

Frightening.

Research shows that's a better way to combat depression.

Actually two ways.

Two safe, natural methods to fight depression without ingesting dangerous chemicals that at best might make you pack on pounds and at worst might make you suicidal.

Safe depression answer #1: Food

Depression is very often caused by or associated with excess acidity in the body and/or nutritional deficiencies, and both of these are a result of the food you eat. And when you look at it logically, it simply makes no sense for people to eat chemicalized stuff that was made in laboratories instead of the foods nature put here for us to eat from fields and gardens, and expect their brains to function properly.

A huge percentage of people who suffer from depressive disorders are deficient in numerous vitamins and minerals, especially B-complex vitamins and magnesium.

The typical diet most people have which is loaded with processed foods and refined carbohydrates is not only inherently nutrient deficient, but it makes your body's pH more acidic. So your body uses up its alkaline minerals (including calcium and magnesium) to neutralize the acid.

Our reliance on these types of foods has increased dramatically over the last 50 years...and so have reported cases of depression.

That's not a coincidence.

The not so shocking news is that increasing numbers of people are seeing a dramatic reduction in their depressive symptoms once they eat more real foods and increase the alkalinity in their body.

When you make food your drug, make your pH more alkaline and nourish your body in the way it was designed to get it, that will encourage both your body AND mind to function right.

Research is showing a lower incidence of depression in people who have a high intake of omega-3 essential fatty acids.

Two researchers from the National Institutes of Health, Joseph Hibbeln and Norman Salem, have spent years studying the links between EFAs and depression.

One finding that prompted their research in this area is the fact that people who eat a lot of fish (which are a natural source of omega-3 fatty acids) have low rates of depression. For example, in Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan, fish consumption is high and the depression rate is extremely low. Almost non-existent, in fact.

The traditional Japanese diet contains about 15 times more omega-3 fatty acids than the American diet, and Japanese people have one-tenth the rate of depression of Americans.

Coincidence? The NIH researchers don't think so.

And get this...

The very lowest rates of depression in Japan are found in fishing villages, where omega-3 loaded fish are aplenty. In 1995 a team of psychiatrists interviewed ALL of the older residents living in a Japanese fishing community. They did not find one single case of clinical depression.

Not a single one!

And as far as Americans go, over the past 50 years we've been eating more and more omega-6 fatty acids (thanks to processed foods and our drugged up meat supply) and fewer and fewer omega-3s.

During that same time period, we've seen an alarming rise in the rate of depression. People born after 1945 are 20 times more likely to be depressed than people born before 1934.

Eat fish and be merry

Research is being conducted that looks extremely promising for alleviating depression with omega-3 EFAs.

One of the first American physicians to treat depressed patients with omega-3s is Donald Rudin, former director of the Department of Molecular Biology at the Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute.

Rudin conducted an experiment where he gave omega-3 supplements to 44 patients with mental disorders. Within 2 hours of taking the supplements, he noted that the mood was improved and depression lifted in some of the patients.

Within 6-8 weeks of supplementation, the majority of his patients slept better, had more energy and felt much less anxious or depressed.

And get this:

When Dr. Rudin switched the patients over to supplements high in omega-6 EFAs instead, or took them off supplements altogether, their symptoms returned!

Similar research continues to be conducted all over the world, but the evidence strongly suggests a link between depression and imbalanced omega-6 and omega-3 EFAs.
